Alternative Expression (Event)

Creek Art showcased an event celebrating music. A night of musical expressions created by three very different electronic musicians each with their own unique style. The event allowed each musician to show their own personality and to allow an audience to feel the different moods that each musician specialises in. Working alongside the VJ artist Hean we opted to create a visual soundscape space where both visuals and music presented a collaborative performance to draw the audience in.

Minimalist Shanghai

Working in collaboration alongside Kathryn Gohmert (The American visual artist) for a one-off event in the Shanghai MoCA Art Gallery. Below shows some details of the event.

Shanghaifs MoCA Art Gallery plays host to an event that provides an exploration into the sights and sounds of a city through the creative vision of ten artists. Three musicians, three video artists, three visual artists and one video installation work combine to share a fresh view on this ever-changing city.

Through both visual and audio mediums this event challenges the listener/viewer to see parts of a city that are often overlooked and often forgotten.  Taking minimalism as the focal and creative direction from which to extract the visions, the event allows a complicated and diverse city to be shown in a refreshing sense of simplicity.
Utilizing the creative talents of local Chinese and local expatriates from around the world to create original work especially for the event, the eveningfs aim is to take you through an audio and visual landscape of Shanghai. In a nutshell: a Minimalist homage of Shanghai: stripped and simplified.

My performance was created from field recordings taken from Shanghai. It was important for me to get a real sense of the city through these recordings and to include recording some traditional Chinese instruments to complete the performance. The piece developed exploring Shanghaifs different moods from tradition to a modern metropolis.

Dartmoor Performance (Original music)

dance

A commission made by the Bath Spa Univeristy in the UK. It was to create a musical collage to accompany an abstract dance movement and visual performance. The concept was the myth of 'Kitty Jay', a girl who killed herself in the Dartmoor hills. The music, (using sounds taken from field recordings from Dartmoor itself) evolves over time to create and build tension. This performance was later toured around Australia.

Below is an excerpt of the music.
